My 5K Running Workout Playlist

February 16, 2012 Leave a comment

I know I’ve disappeared for a long, long while but I’m back, kinda. So yes, you’ve read my headline right. Your girl is training trying to run a 5K race in April. No, I have not signed up to run one yet but I plan to in the near future! Running a 5K is on my imaginary bucket list (I know, piece of cake for the average human but I have lots of jiggle) and I finally decided to stop thinking about doing it and finally do it. Well, yesterday was my first day running on the treadmill since my bout with bronchitis (it was not cute AT ALL). I’m happy to say I didn’t stop and I ran the hilly 5K option on the treadmill in 32 minutes. I thought I was going to die afterwards but I did it!! The only motivation (other than seeing the finish line) was my super duper awesome playlist I made for it. I wanted to share it with the masses 5 readers I have and hopefully, this can motivate you to kick ass in the gym as well. Thank me later!!!

1. Rihanna – Where Have You Been
2. Flo Rida – Good Feeling (DON’T LAUGH! This song cranks in the gym!)
3. Salt-N-Pepa – Push It
4. Beyonce – Countdown
5. Pitbull f/ Ne-Yo – Give Me Everything
6. Rihanna – We Found Love
7. LMFAO – Sexy and I Know It (Again, don’t laugh & judge. This song is stupid funny and very motivated while sweaty!)
8. Alexandra Stan – Mr. Saxobeat
9. Magic System – Ambiance a l’africaine (A little African music goes a long way in keeping your energy up.)

Another fun Fatou tip, to stay motivated, not only do I crank these songs up, I pretend that I’m the star video ho in each video. That really keeps my energy. Yes, I’m a fool.

I’m interested to hear your favorite workout songs so I can add them to my gym playlists.

More Beastmode Workout Tracks

July 22, 2010 1 comment

I enjoyed sharing some of my workout songs so much that I had to share 10 more of my workout jams. I felt so bad about songs I didn’t include that I furiously created a new list!! Let me know your thoughts & please feel free to disagree with me (though I’m sure you won’t, I have a great ear!!).

10. Black Eyed Peas – Showdown
First, let me say that it pains my heart to include a BEP song since they saturate the radio forever & a day when they release a new record, but I cannot deny their skill of creating a dance jam. I included this obscure song, clocking in at 4:27 minutes. As much as I cannot stand Will.I.Am, he is a genius at inescapable creating ear crack music.

9. N.E.R.D. – Kill Joy
Anyone who knows me knows my irrational, unconditional love for all things Pharrell. They also know about our awesome moment at 930 Club in DC, when he came off the the stage, grabbed my hand, and sang to me. I make it a point to support N.E.R.D. whenever they go on tour, either as an opening or main act. I had to include Kill Joy on my list because this always brings the house down in concert, all 4:10 minutes of it!

8. Kim Wilde – Kids in America
Once again, I cannot express enough how much I love the 80s. And this song was included in one of my favorite movies, Clueless!! Those two reasons are precisely why this song has made my workout list. 4:02 minutes of new wave goodness!!

7. Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam – Let the Beat Hit Em
Don’t deny the love you have for this iconic jam, & group for that matter! Club banger from way back in the day (and WAAAYYYY before I even knew what a club was), I love surprising my ears with all 4:35 minutes of this jam!!

6. Sarafina! Soundtrack – Freedom Is Coming Tomorrow
Admit it, you were jammin hard to this in the movie theater way back when you saw Sarafina! I know I was. Powerful song & who can resist moving their hips to this beat? This song has so much meaning, & the best part is that the meaning is completely personal to each person. I keep this on repeat, all 3:15 of it!!

5. Madonna – Dress You Up
“You’ve got style, that’s what all the girls say.” No good workout mix is complete without vintage Madonna. I love ALL things Madonna so it was very hard choosing ONLY one song from her collection but Dress You Up narrowed out Jump & Get Into the Groove. I truly respect Madonna’s musical transformation (as well as body transformation )over her 25+ year career. I love the playfulness of this song & at 3:56 minutes, you’re right in the fat burning zone!!

4. Sean Kingston – Fire Burning
No, Sean Kingston is not that svelte Adonis but his jam Fire Burning will get you that svelte, hot body!! Envision yourself in Jamaica with a fruity drink in a coconut with your dream body! I know I do when I’m going full speed to this jam at the gym, all 3:53 minutes of it!!

3. Alanis Morissette – You Oughta Know
One of the main reasons I go to the gym is to release tension. Nothing releases my negative energy more than belting this scorned woman’s anthem!! Believe me, you will sweat hard working out to this & realize how much tension you needed to release. All 4:09 minutes of this song still goes hard, 15 years later!!

2. Michael Jackson – Working Day and Night
If you do not own MJ’s BEST record Off the Wall, immediately get up, put on the DUNCE CAP, and sit in the corner. Seriously, this record is beyond amazing, & this song is so sexy, dancetastic, & fabulous, all 5:15 minutes of it.

1. Hot Chip – I Feel Better
Can you believe I have a CURRENT song as my #1? Hot Chip is the business and their new record One Life Stand does not disappoint. Clocking in at 4:42, this song has an excellent dance buildup to have you exerting your last little bit of energy into finishing your 700+ calorie workout.

I cannot express how much I enjoy sharing my workout jams with all 15 of you my audience!! Since I shared with you, you gotta share with me. What are your favorite workout jams? Have I introduced you to new great jams (please say yes!!)?

My Favorite Workout Songs

July 21, 2010 1 comment

So, I’m a curvy, West African chick & I love it! But, for the past 5 years of my life, I’m been trying my hardest to tame my curves, not lose them. Kim Kardashian is my body icon since, like her, I’m a 5’3″ chick with boobs, hips, & a butt. It’s a struggle but I will tame my curves. My favorite trainer girls Nikki Baksh & Deborah Horton have been instrumental in teaching me the right way to tame my curves as well proper workout methods. First thing first, something I didn’t know until May, 1 lb of fat = 3500 calories. That little fact awakened me & made me realize that everything I used to do in the gym wasn’t enough to even lose 1 lb a week. BTW, this is what 1 lb of fat looks like –

So, for all of us folks who remember basic math, if you want to efficiently lose weight each week, you gotta burn at least 700 calories, 5 times a week. And that’s to lose one pound. So, with that nugget of knowledge in my brain, I chose to combine taking some Total Body Conditioning classes, combined with treadmill & elliptical (the one with the “Stride Length”, as that is harder) work. You’d be surprised how fast (and painless) you can burn 700 calories mixing the classes with machines, or even mixing the treadmill & the elliptical. My key to working out is NOT focusing on how hot is it, or how long it will take. I focus on the MUSIC & the fun of working out to the music. Luckily for me, my girls Nikki & Deborah have awesome music mixes for their classes. But unlucky for me, I cannot work out with them every single day so it’s up to me to find great music. So after much chatter on my end (you can’t be surprised, it’s me!!), here’s 10 of my favorite workout songs to get me through my 700 calories. I will be periodically changing my workout mix, as you gotta keep it fresh. If I can help one person discover new music & add it to his/her workout mix, then this whole blog is worth it!!

Here’s my 10 songs that keep me on beastmode at the gym:

10) Destra – I Dare You
This is 3:32 minutes of Soca goodness. Pretend you’re in Trinidad for Carnival with that gorgeous fit body & wine it out in the gym!!

9) Danity Kane – Pretty Boy
With lyrics like “It’s soakin over here come and wipe me down,” it’s no wonder why this workout jam made my list. Clocking in at 3:59 minutes, this is such a hype song to keep you pumped in the gym!

8) Bonnie Tyler – Holding out for a Hero
Anyone who knows me knows I love the 80s. This song was featured in Footloose & I love a workout song that I can belt while running. I feel the lyrics (cause I’m definitely “holding out for a hero ’til the end of the night”) & clocking in at a whopping 5:50 minutes, you’re already way in the fight by the time this song is over. & yes, this is THE “Total Eclipse of the Heart” Bonnie Tyler.

7) a-ha – Take on Me
This is one of my FAVORITE songs on Earth. There is never a time when I hear this song that I’m not up & dancing. I love shocking my body with this song right when I’m in the thick of working out. This song is 3:47 minutes long of new wave goodness. Plus, who can resist a song with synthesizers?

6) Mya – My Love is Like…Wo
I have to show love for my DC urea girl Mya. This is my favorite Mya song & she WORKS IT OUT in the video (YouTube it if you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing it). She has an enviable body, one that you may want to keep in mind as inspiration to continue working out. This song is 3:29 minutes long.

5) Michael Jackson – Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’
You need some sassy songs in your workout mix, as well as a great Michael Jackson tune. Voila, this song fits both criteria & clocking in at 6:04 minutes long, you will be sweating even more by the song’s end. Plus, since you know the words front & back (at least I do), it’s the perfect jam to keep you motivated to finish the fight!

4) Shiny Toy Guns – Major Tom (Coming Home)
One of my favorite covers of a great 80s jam. Not much I can say but I love the interpretation & I love belting it, especially at the end! This song is 4:11 minutes long.

3) Britney Spears – 3
Pre-babies & post-babies Britney body is another body I covet. Say what you want about this chick but she knows how to make a workout jam. This video is HOTNESS PERSONIFIED & the lyrics are laughably wonderful. You need lyrics that will keep you awake & a body image to imagine as you start to tire out. At 3:25 minutes, this song provides both!

2) Julian Casablancas – Left & Right in the Dark
NEW WAVE is back, & my boy Julian Casablancas of the Strokes is leading the resurgence. This is one of my favorite current songs. Such a feelgood record, clocking in at 4:59 minutes. When you think you’re tired, Julian starts screaming at you to “Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up!” Yep, I’m awake & working out!

AND COMING IN AT NUMBER 1…..

1) Lady Gaga – Alejandro
Yes, I love my girl Gagita! And I loved this song way before it was released as a single. For everyone who love 90s Ace of Base circa “I Saw the Sign”, this song brings me back to that time in life when I was a young girl in elementary school. Lady Gaga makes great dance songs & this is my favorite one. This actually stays on repeat in my workout mix. 4:34 of summer goodness!!

It was very hard choosing 10 songs to showcase. What do you think of my choices? I’m always looking for more songs to add to my mix & I plan to keep posting more songs that I love working out to. Like I said, if I’ve introduced you to a new workout jam, then this blog was well worth it!! Keep up the good workout!! I know I will!!
